Drawings

From childhood to the present, Sonfist has documented his experiences with nature through drawings. While his early works depicted the Hemlock Forest near where he was raised, his more contemporary works reflect his most recent encounters with the natural world. Each drawing is an attempt to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the land.

Childhood & Contemporary Drawings

The watercolor/ink drawings on the left panels are from Sonfist's childhood, and the pencil drawings are from 2005. The drawings contrast his more innocent childhood view with his current understanding of the environment.

Time Landscapes of New York City (1965)
Sonfist proposed a series of landscapes throughout the city where ancient landscape would be restored to its primeval state, before human intervention. He has proposed 50 sites throughout the city. The idea is to balance contemporary nature of the city with the historical nature before it.
